The Bulgarian people have their own sufferings. They suffered major massacres at the end of the 19th century by the Ottoman-led bashi-bazouk, the Ottoman Empire having colonized Bulgarian lands for more than five centuries.
In 1876, the Ottomans decided to eliminate the Bulgarian Christians and make them pay for their desire for independence. The Ottomans used barbarians, the Bashi-Bazouk, Turkish mercenaries, to carry out pogroms among the Bulgarian Christian population. The press of the time was outraged by the Ottoman exactions, but the British Empire didn’t want to get angry with the Ottoman Empire, so they issued a statement of extreme platitude.
When the Nazis tried to deport and massacre Bulgarian Jews, the Bulgarian people stood up before the German power to save their Jewish brothers.
The Bulgarian people are forever blessed.
This poem was written by the famous philosopher-writer David Smadja-Livorno to thank the Bulgarian people.
