Ever since the founding of the United States, America has been driven by a pro-Israel sentiment. Contrary to popular belief, evangelical support carries significant weight in the pro-Israel geopolitical balance in the United States.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


However, this would overlook the pressure exerted by evangelicals, without which one cannot understand why the U.S. government has often supported the Jewish state and why the 2012 presidential candidates debated Israel so extensively. The most enthusiastic defenders of the State of Israel in the United States are not Jews, but Christians. In fact, Christian Zionism is more widespread than Jewish Zionism. It is a movement that emerged from evangelical Protestantism and consists mainly of evangelical Christians, though it also includes some Mormons, Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses, and Jews. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Myth to Restorationist and Zionist Politics Christian Zionism is rooted in the cultural history of the United States. Indeed, the Puritans identified with the Hebrew people of the Bible, and many of them bore Hebrew names. Furthermore, in the 17th century, they felt called by God while imagining themselves to be persecuted by Pharaoh\u2014that is, King Charles I. Like the Exodus of the Hebrews, they crossed the Atlantic, that other Red Sea.

Just as Moses had led the Hebrew people to the Promised Land, John Winthrop led the Puritans to America aboard the Arbella toward their new Zion. In 1630, New England thus became the City upon a Hill, whose mission, drawn from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, was to be \u201cthe light of the world\u201d (Matthew 5:14\u201316). Consequently, America represented for them the New Israel, and all the colonies were influenced by this sense of divine election and by philosemitism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This pro-Semitic cultural sentiment that permeated Christian Zionism was reinforced by certain beliefs for which John Nelson Darby (1800\u20131882) was the principal proponent. Indeed, without his efforts and teachings in the United States, this movement would never have gained momentum. The ideas of this British theologian embraced restorationism, which sought the restoration of Israel, the ancestral homeland of the Jews.

These ideas were said to have foretold the restoration of Israel, followed by the capture of Jerusalem by the Jews. These beliefs were literally validated within evangelical circles in 1948, when the State of Israel was proclaimed, and then in 1967 when Jerusalem came under Jewish jurisdiction. These doctrines thus ignited the Christian Zionist movement: the existence of Israel is perceived as a miracle proving the existence of God, who follows the announced timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0This small state thus represents the raison d\u2019\u00eatre of the current movement. However, to move beyond their religious sphere, other factors must have motivated evangelicals to engage in geopolitical activism. This type of Zionism could not have taken on its political and activist form without the help of William Eugene Blackstone (1841\u20131935).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By combining millenarian beliefs with compassion, he and his fellow believers had been concerned with the plight of the Jews since the 18th century. A believer in millenarian prophecy and a proponent of restorationism, Blackstone believed that the United States had been given a divine mission to restore the Jews to their ancestral homeland.

He thus won the sympathy of Restorationist Jews, although they did not fully grasp his thinking, which was based on a particular eschatology. It was in this context that Louis Brandeis urged Blackstone to pressure the Washington administration to support the creation of a Jewish nation. The Jewish-Evangelical alliance thus became pragmatic[2]. It culminated in the famous petition known as The Blackstone Memorial, which sought to influence President Wilson to support the creation of a Jewish state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This strategic alliance would endure, and Blackstone\u2019s activism showed pro-Israel evangelicals the way forward. Nevertheless, without the political involvement of religious leaders such as Reverends Billy Graham and Martin Luther King, and especially without the emergence of the Christian right in the 1970s, the Christian Zionist movement would certainly have remained confined to the religious sphere.

When Pastor Jerry Falwell founded a political organization in 1979 that brought together conservative and fundamentalist Christians, The Moral Majority, he made support for Zionism a cornerstone of his institution. Thus, he became the public spokesperson for Christian Zionism by maintaining close ties with Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and later with Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defense of the State of Israel by American evangelicals has institutionalized this movement by officially bringing evangelicals into the geopolitical arena. Consequently, Christian Zionism has been consolidated over the years by this cultural predisposition in America, these eschatological and prophetic theologies, the tradition of political intervention among these co-religionists, as well as the support of Zionist Israeli leaders. However, Falwell did not create a single organization dedicated to Israel.

Moreover, although the only registered Christian lobby in the U.S. Congress, the Christians\u2019 Israel Public Action Campaign (CIPAC), is active, this group has never succeeded in mobilizing large numbers of believers. Various organizations have emerged, but they have not exerted as much influence on Washington. More recently, another charismatic leader, John Hagee, decided to step forward to rally Christians so that they could all speak with one voice and be far more influential and credible.These believers are all the more inclined to join such an organization\u2014which describes itself as fundamentally Christian and apolitical\u2014because they are sometimes resistant to the idea of supporting the actions of a group that is officially political. From Religious Belief to Geopolitical Practice: John Hagee and CUFI In 2006, John Hagee, pastor of the Cornerstone Megachurch in San Antonio, Texas, founded with the support of 400 religious leaders the most visible, largest, and most active of the pro-Israel Christian organizations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christians United for Israel, also known by its acronym CUFI. It is a Christian version of a Jewish lobby, AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee), which enables individuals, para-ecclesiastical associations, and pro-Israel churches to speak out in defense of Israel through a unified message. Furthermore, it spreads Zionist ideology primarily within evangelical circles.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CUFI is the concrete embodiment of Hagee\u2019s entire political-religious vision, which extends from simple religious belief to institutionalization and, ultimately, to geopolitically coordinated action. This organization thus serves as one of the channels for pro-Israel Christian doctrine in the secular and political world. CUFI began in July 2006 with its first major rally in Washington, D.C., which drew 3,500 evangelicals. The group continues to grow every year. Since its inception, Hagee and his fellow Zionists have been particularly determined to defend Israel against Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This pastor has become a sort of \u201cpope\u201d of Christian Zionism, a movement that seeks to be geopolitically active in the name of divine mandates. To lend credibility to their support and make it seem less millenarian, Hagee and his followers have had to set aside their most controversial prophetic and eschatological beliefs in favor of divine laws. They have thus emphasized the pro-Israel commandments, which allegedly require American evangelicals to defend the State of Israel and to bless Israel and the Jews so that they may prosper, according to a literal interpretation of Genesis 12:3.

Added to this divine command is the prohibition against dividing the Israeli territory, as the prophet Jeremiah is said to have declared in perpetuity. To legitimize the Jewish people\u2019s possession of the land of Israel, these Christians rely literally on the following biblical passages: Genesis 12:1\u20132; 13:14\u201315; 17:8; Isaiah 19:24\u201325. In short, there is no room for debate regarding Israel: it is God\u2019s property, and He has therefore established an eternal covenant with His people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their advocacy emphasizes the State of Israel\u2019s historic right to exist, the right of Jews to immigrate there, and Israel\u2019s right to defend itself against terrorist attacks by Hamas or Hezbollah. They assert that Israel has the right to fight against Iran, which seeks to acquire nuclear weapons to destroy Israel and then the United States. For these evangelicals, supporting Israel means supporting God\u2019s foreign policy. In just fifteen years, CUFI\u2019s growth has been exponential.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
